LANDSLIDES CLAIM LIVES OF OUR FARMERS AGAIN

The torrential rains that have continuously been falling in the past few days around Mt. Elgon have led to at least two mudslides putting the death toll to about 43 as reported by the residents. Residents say that the rocks from the top had its vegetation cover removed and yet it was meant to hold them; leading to the soils getting socked, releasing the rocks and mud to flow downwards.

These have occurred in Sisiyi in Buluganya sub counties in Bulambuli district which happens to be occupied by our Buginyanya primary society farmer members.

Lovis Masiga; one of our first farmers and very active member of the society passed on with his family that comprised of grand children who were spending their holidays at his home. 15 family members are reported to have perished in his house and 9 bodies retrieved as reported by one of the Late Masiga’s sons a teacher at a nearby town.

As per Monday evening, we had not yet identified other society members who could have lost their lives but coffee fields have been washed away.

If these rains continue, more lives and properties are bound to be lost as I witnessed another rock coming down when the Red Cross and Uganda police, residents were still searching for more bodies. Work was temporary abandoned as people scattered in different directions for safety. Many got injuries with some breaking their legs in the process.

Currently transport to our two other societies Nasufwa and Buginyanya has been cut off due to the mudslides.
